Privacy
We want to know as little about you as possible. We only take what's needed to manage your subscription, your location never leaves your phone, and we never sell anyone's information.

Who are we?

When you use the app
- To use the app you need a Baró account (email and password) and a subscription, which you buy in the app after logging in. The subscription is linked to your account.
- We only ask for your location when you want us to, for example when you tap “Where am I?” or open “Near me” and have allowed it. Your phone uses it to work out how far the nearest bars are. It isn't sent to us and we don't store it. You can turn this off in your settings at any time.
- The app also keeps a copy of pages and bar info so it works offline. You can clear this by deleting Baró's saved data on your phone or computer.
- No ads and nobody tracking you. We don't use cookies that follow what you do, and no analytics tools from other companies.
Others involved
- The map comes from OpenStreetMap. As always online, their server sees your IP address (a kind of address for your device on the internet) and which part of the map you're looking at. You can read the OpenStreetMap privacy policy.
- If you tap directions, Google Maps (or your phone's map app) opens. Their terms apply there.
- The subscription goes through Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play). They handle the payment and your card, and their own privacy rules apply. We never see your card.
- To keep track of whether your subscription is active we use RevenueCat. It receives a random ID for the app on your phone and purchase info from Apple or Google (which subscription, when it started and when it ends). Not your name and not your card.
- The baroapp.is website is hosted by Cloudflare. They log technical info, such as IP addresses, for a short time to keep the site up and secure. On the website we also use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count visits. It uses no cookies and doesn't follow you around the web.
If you create a Baró account
Baró is only for people aged 20 and over, because the app is about alcohol and in Iceland alcohol can't be sold to anyone under 20. That's why we ask for your date of birth when you create an account. We only use it to check that you're 20 or older, and we don't store it. All we keep is that your age was confirmed, and when.
We also store your email, your name if you gave it, and your password. The password is stored encrypted (as a “hash”), so nobody can read it, not even us. We only use your email to log you in and to let you know if something important comes up. Never for ads.
When you log in, your phone saves a key so you stay logged in. To protect against people guessing passwords, we also briefly keep count of login attempts, but the IP address itself isn't stored.
The data is stored with Cloudflare. You can delete your account yourself in the app, under My account → Delete account. We then delete everything about the account straight away. You can also email us at info@baroapp.is.
When you sign up your bar
We need the bar's name, the company's ID number (kennitala), a contact name, an email and a phone number. That's what's needed to manage the subscription and get in touch.
- We use this to make sure you're allowed to sign up the bar, to send you info about the subscription, and to publish the deals you add.
- Everything you add about the bar itself, like happy hour, prices, opening hours and events, is visible to everyone in the app. We don't publish the contact details.
- Right now, while this is only a trial, the sign-up is only saved on your device and isn't sent to us.
- We keep the info while the subscription is active, and after that for as long as accounting law requires.
Payments
Subscription in the app: Apple or Google take the payment. We only learn whether the subscription is active and when it renews. You cancel it in your phone's settings.
Bars: Bars pay on the website through a payment provider. The card is entered on their secure page, not ours, and we never see the card number. We only learn whether the payment went through, the card type and the last four digits. Bar payments aren't connected yet, so it's only a trial and nothing is charged.
Where the bar info comes from
- Bar locations and basic info come from OpenStreetMap (ODbL).
- Happy hour times, prices and deals come only from the bars themselves, the ones subscribed to Baró.
- Events come from the bars and from other listings, such as The Reykjavík Grapevine events. We always say where they come from.
- Photos are from Wikimedia Commons and the author's name is shown with each photo.
This is info about businesses, not people. Run a bar and want us to change or remove something? Just get in touch and we'll fix it.
Your rights
You can always find out what we know about you, have it corrected or deleted, and object to how we use it. Just email us at info@baroapp.is. If you feel we're not handling your info properly, you can also contact Persónuvernd (the Icelandic Data Protection Authority).
If anything changes
If we change how we handle information, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
